Quoted in Trouw on the Leiden Declaration

I was quoted in the Dutch newspaper Trouw, in an article by Bas den Hond, “Wiskundigen waarschuwen voor AI in hun vak: ‘Wat is nog onze rol?’” (“Mathematicians warn against AI in their profession: ‘What is our role anymore?’“, June 3, 2026), about the Leiden Declaration on Artificial Intelligence and Mathematics. I signed the declaration along with hundreds of colleagues; it argues for norms that keep mathematics centered on human researchers — their curiosity, their critical judgment, and their right to recognition for their work.

FWIW, a few corrections to the details about me in the article:

  • I worked at Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore, California, not New Mexico.
  • SIAM is the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, not the American Association for Applied Mathematics.
  • My role at SIAM is Vice President for Publications, not deputy head of the publications department.

PDF copies: English translation and the Dutch print edition (Trouw, June 6, 2026).
